Before RTLS requirements are finalized, the project team should be able to answer the following:

  • What operational problems are we solving, and for which departments?
  • Which use cases are required at opening, and which are planned for later phases?
  • What level of location accuracy does each use case actually require?
  • What wireless infrastructure will the hospital use, and what RTLS support does it provide natively?
  • Has infrastructure density been evaluated against RTLS location performance requirements — not just connectivity coverage?
  • Are there clinical areas where the physical environment will require additional infrastructure consideration?
  • Are IT, clinical operations, facilities, security, and biomedical engineering represented in the planning conversation?
  • Who will own RTLS management after the facility opens?
  • Which hospital systems will need to consume location data?
  • What network, security, and API requirements apply to each integration?
  • Have integration owners been identified and timelines established before go-live?
  • What additional RTLS applications could the hospital reasonably add in the first three to five years?
  • Does the infrastructure design preserve those options without requiring significant retrofit?
  • How will RTLS performance be tested against the actual environment before opening?
  • What constitutes a successful deployment for each use case?
