Process Flow for Manufacturing

AiRISTA’s Unified Vision Solution (UVS) has a powerful workflow engine to facilitate process flows for
the most sophisticated models. Based on an intuitive scripting engine, we translate storyboards into a set of
cascading rules that collect process information from a sensor agnostic southbound interface and integrate
with production systems for closed loop processing.

Lean production techniques have been adopted by more than 75% of machine shops across the country. Gemba Consulting has identified 7 flows of manufacturing:

    • the flow of raw materials.

    • the flow of work-in-progress.

    • the flow of finished goods.

    • the flow of operators.

    • the flow of machines.

    • the flow of information.

    • the flow of engineering.

At the heart of flow is ensuring the right material gets delivered to the right place at the right time. When considering improvements to flow, consider the following:

  • map the current process
  • identify all waste in the current process
  • map the ideal process
  • develop an action plan

Most importantly, consider the role of employees. True to the Japanese principles of Kaizen, employees must be involved in the definition of the process improvement, and followed through with buy-in and education.

Perishable Rubber Stock of Tire Manufacturer

A tire manufacturer scraps tons of rubber stock each year when it exceeds expiration dates. It tries to maintain a FIFO policy, but the paper based system was error prone. With active Wi-Fi tags on material spindles, they are able to track the age and location electronically. When moved to the vulcanizing line, a wireless handshake ensures the correct grade of rubber has been delivered to the right line, further reducing opportunities for error.

Just in Time Production of ETO Fork Trucks

A maker of fork trucks runs an engineered-to-order production process. Each truck has a unique bill of components. In the face of a missed delivery deadline, fork trucks have been air freighted half way around the word at an expense equal to the value of the truck! To avoid delays, large assemblies needed for the day’s production schedule are tagged and staged for delivery to each work cell. Before a truck is moved to its next work cell, a wireless check confirms the expected components are in place.

Tribal Knowledge of Autoclave Operations

Too few autoclaves creates a bottleneck for the manufacturer of carbon fiber aircraft parts. The more efficient the various parts are organized on the autoclave rack, the higher the throughput. Unfortunately, these processes are not documented, and this tribal knowledge is begin lost as the workforce ages. To collect this information automatically, high temperature tags are attached to the airframe parts as they are stacked on the autoclave rack. This grouping of parts and the resulting throughput create patterns which can be documented and shared with new employees.
